Why I Switched to DIY Natural Toothpaste

Have you ever thought about what’s actually in your store-bought toothpaste? While it’s easy to grab a tube off the shelf, many commercial toothpastes are loaded with ingredients that might not be the best for you—or the planet.

Here’s why I decided to make my own:

  1. Harsh Chemicals

Store-bought toothpaste often contains fluoride, SLS (the stuff that makes it foam), and other chemicals. While fluoride can help prevent cavities, too much of it isn’t great, especially for kids. And SLS? It’s known to irritate sensitive mouths and can even cause canker sores.

  2. Fake Sweeteners and Flavors.

Many brands use artificial sweeteners and synthetic flavors to make toothpaste taste good, but they don’t actually do anything for your oral health.

  3. Too Abrasive on Enamel.

Some toothpastes are so abrasive that they wear down your enamel over time, leading to sensitivity. Whitening toothpastes, in particular, often rely on chemicals that can irritate gums and teeth if overused.

  4. Microplastics and Preservatives.

Yes, some toothpastes have tiny plastic particles in them, which are terrible for the environment and marine life. Plus, preservatives like parabens and synthetic dyes aren’t something I want in my mouth every day.

  5. Environmental Waste.

Most toothpaste tubes aren’t recyclable, meaning they end up in landfills. And some toothpaste ingredients, like triclosan, can pollute waterways and harm ecosystems.

So, I decided to go the natural route and make my own toothpaste. It’s super easy, and I know exactly what’s in it.

Benefits of the Ingredients in DIY Whitening Toothpaste

Each ingredient in this natural toothpaste recipe serves a specific purpose, offering both oral health benefits and whitening effects:

    1. Bicarb (Baking Soda):

- Acts as a mild abrasive to gently remove surface stains from teeth.

- Neutralizes acids in the mouth, helping to prevent cavities.

- Freshens breath by combating odour-causing bacteria.

    2. Bentonite Clay:

- Rich in minerals that can help remineralize teeth.

- Gently detoxifies the mouth by binding to toxins and impurities.

- Balances pH levels, creating a healthy oral environment.

    3. Activated Charcoal:

- Absorbs tannins from coffee, tea, and wine that cause stains.

- Naturally whitens teeth by lifting surface stains without harsh chemicals.

- Helps remove toxins and impurities for a deep clean.

    4. Coconut Oil:

- Known for its antimicrobial properties, it helps reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth.

- Soothes gums and aids in preventing gum disease.

- Adds a smooth texture to the toothpaste.

    5. Essential Oil (e.g., Aniseed):

- Adds a pleasant flavour to the toothpaste.

- Provides antibacterial properties to keep your mouth fresh.

- Can be customized to your taste (peppermint, clove, or cinnamon are great alternatives).

My DIY Natural Whitening Toothpaste Recipe

Here’s what I use:

-   1/3 cup Baking Soda:   Gently removes stains and neutralizes mouth acids.

-   1 tsp Bentonite Clay:   Helps remineralize teeth and detoxifies your mouth.

-   1 tsp Activated Charcoal:   Absorbs surface stains and leaves your teeth looking bright.

-   3 tsp Coconut Oil:   Antimicrobial and soothing for gums.

-   A Few Drops of Essential Oil (I love Aniseed):   For a fresh flavour and added antibacterial power.

-   Water:   Just enough to make it into a paste.

Mix it all together, and you’re done! I love how clean and fresh my teeth feel afterward, and it’s gentle on both my teeth and the planet.
